What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a procedure that uses digital technology to create an impression of a patient’s misaligned teeth. An Invisalign software will then use this impression, and the dental practitioner’s regimen, to plan the movement of the patient’s teeth from its current position to the final desired position.
A batch of clear aligners will be custom made for the patient. Each aligner will be fitted onto the patient’s teeth for about two weeks and then replaced by another one. In this way, the patient’s misaligned teeth will be moved slowly to its final desired position.
Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign’s transparent aligners will allow you to adjust your teeth discreetly. People will hardly notice that you are going through the treatment. Also, the aligners can be removed before meals, or before brushing and flossing your teeth, and then replaced afterward. You can take any food or drink and maintain good oral hygiene throughout the period of treatment.
Invisalign does not use the irritating wires that are used with traditional metal braces, so they are more comfortable.
Visits to the dentist’s office will not be so frequent. Perhaps only one visit will be required every four to six weeks.
Is Invisalign Painful?
Invisalign does not cause as much pain as traditional braces do. However, they could cause some discomfort within the first few days after being fitted in. This happens because the teeth are pushing back against the aligners and trying to return to their former position.
How Long Should Invisalign Aligners Be Worn?
The complexity of the orthodontic problem will determine the length of treatment. In all, it usually takes anywhere from twelve to thirty-six months to complete the procedure.
It is advisable to wear the aligners for no less than twenty to twenty-two hours each day. The aligners should be removed before meals, and before brushing and flossing your teeth, and then replaced promptly. Failure to religiously follow this regimen could unnecessarily prolong the procedure.
Care for Teeth and Invisalign Aligners
The aligners must be detached before every meal and fitted back on afterward. The teeth should be brushed after every meal before the aligners are placed back on the teeth. The teeth must be flossed daily. It is acceptable to drink water while wearing the aligners but hot beverages must be avoided.
The manufacturer’s cleaning system should be used to clean the aligners. If this is not available, the aligners can be brushed and rinsed using cold or lukewarm water. Hot water should not be used.
